Formulating for Menopausal Skin

Estrogen plays a large role in the maintenance of the skin and hair; therefore declining estrogen levels during menopause can have a profound effect on the skin.

Reduced estrogen levels lead to thinner skin, an increase in number and depth of wrinkles, increased skin dryness, and decreased skin firmness and elasticity1. Cell turnover slows down and collagen decreases2. Skin can become more sensitive and pigmentation increases. The visible signs may be more or less prominent depending on the skin tone.

This class will focus on cosmetic products and ingredients which can help to alleviate symptoms, including improving hydration and moisturization, calming and soothing, encouraging collagen production and reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

In this class, you will learn:

  • What is menopause and the typical symptoms.
  • The function of estrogen in the skin.
  • What happens to the skin during menopause.
  • Helpful skincare products for perimenopause and menopause.
  • Useful skincare ingredients for menopause, including helpful humectants and hydrating ingredients, moisturizing ingredients, soothing and cooling ingredients, and active ingredients that stimulate collagen and elastin production, stimulate ceramide and free fatty acid synthesis, increase cell turnover, reduce pigmentation, build the skin’s moisture barrier, and provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • About menopause skincare brands and examples of products on the market formulated for menopausal skin.

You will receive three formulations from our lab, ready for you to make at home.

  • Soothing Facial Mist – to hydrate, refresh and soothe the skin. It will help cool the skin during a hot flash.
  • Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum – featuring four different humectants to hydrate, plump and smooth the skin which will help to minimize the appearance of fine lines. The serum also features a variety of collagen-boosting ingredients to enhance skin firmness and elasticity.
  • Nourishing Oat and Maca Body Cream – The body cream relieves dry skin on the body by moisturizing, hydrating and soothing it. The body cream will restore lustre and moisture to ashy or lacklustre skin.

With each formulation, we share an example on the market, product development questions, formula, instructions and product specifications. Follow our formulations and then create your own! This class includes a beautiful textbook to download and a demonstration video showing our cosmetic scientist making the Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum, which you can follow along with step by step.

Please note: Acne can also be experienced during the menopause but this topic is not covered in this class. To learn more about this we recommend our Formulating Clarifying Skincare for Acne-prone Skin class.
