Formulating Solid Conditioner Bars

The popularity of solid conditioner bars has grown alongside solid shampoo bars. Typically used together, they are both excellent examples of zero waste products.

Conditioner bars contain many of the same ‘conditioning’ ingredients as regular conditioners but unlike other types of conditioner, conditioner bars contain little to no water,
meaning they can take a solid form that does not require any packaging.

In this class, you will use natural cationic emulsifiers, butters, oils and more to create nourishing solid conditioner bars for different hair types. We will take inspiration from exciting brands leading the way in solid haircare, such as Ethique.

The benefits of solid conditioner bars include:

  • Effective, natural hair conditioning.
  • They are easy to make (no emulsification is required).
  • They are longer lasting compared to liquid conditioners.
  • A waterless final product.
  • Do not require packaging in a bottle (considered ‘zero waste’).
  • Can be taken in carry-on bags when traveling.
  • Do not require microbiological testing (PET) as they do not contain water.
  • Can also be used as a shaving bar to provide slip and glide

In this class, you will discover:

  • What solid conditioner bars are.
  • The science behind how conditioners function.
  • Advantages and disadvantages of solid conditioner.
  • Ingredients used in solid conditioner bars.
