Formulating Water-in-Oil (W-O) Emulsions

Take your skills further by learning to formulate water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions! Most cosmetic emulsions are oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions where oil droplets are dispersed within a water phase. W/O emulsions are more unusual and are formed of water droplets dispersed within an oil phase.

This type of emulsion has a heavier texture and is oilier than O/W emulsions. With W/O emulsions you can create creams that are:

  • Very moisturizing, rich, and nourishing.
  • Long lasting on the skin.
  • More water-resistant.
  • Occlusive on the skin, which helps decrease TEWL.

W/O emulsions are perfect for creating effective barrier creams, sunscreen, foundation, diaper cream, and weather shielding creams.

In this class, we will take a detailed look at W/O emulsions including their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, ingredients, and how to formulate them.

There are very important differences between W/O and O/W emulsions in terms of their ingredients, how to stabilize them, the manufacturing method used, and more, all of which we cover in detail.

Receive two formulations from our lab, ready for you to make at home:

  • Weather Protection Cream.
  • Nourishing Body Cream.

With each formulation we share the product development questions, formula, instructions, and product specifications. Follow our formulations and then create your own!

This class includes a beautiful textbook to download and a demonstration video showing our cosmetic scientist making the Nourishing Body Cream, which you can follow along with step by step.
