Formulating Emulsion-based Clay Face Masks

Emulsion-based clay face masks are creamy, smooth and ready to apply. Unlike dry clay masks that need to be mixed with water by the consumer prior to application, these masks are formulated as elegant, ready-to-use emulsions that can be used as multifunctional cleansers, masks and exfoliators.
Emulsion-based clay face masks have a functional edge over dry, powdered face masks and products can be designed to provide a huge range of skin benefits. They deliver all the purifying and remineralizing benefits of clay, as well as providing a base for a range of other cosmetic ingredients including water soluble extracts and actives including humectants, AHAs, salicylic acid, vitamins and plant extracts, as well as a range of oil soluble ingredients such as plant oils, butters, waxes and esters.
In this class, you’ll learn how to formulate this advanced type of mask. We’ll explain how to create a natural broad-spectrum preservative system to preserve them effectively (which can be difficult due to the clay itself which presents a microbiological risk) and we’ll share with you the results of professional preservative efficacy testing.
Receive three exciting formulations from our lab, ready for you to make at home:
- Pink Clay and Pomegranate Clarifying Cleanser and Mask.
- Orange and Almond 3-in-1 Exfoliator, Cleanser and Mask.
- Purifying Charcoal Cleanser and Mask.
With each formulation we share the product development questions, formula, instructions and product specifications. Follow our formulations and then create your own!
We’ll also share with you:
- How to formulate emulsion-based clay face masks including the key ingredients used.
- A formulation template which you can use to formulate your own masks.
- Examples of products on the market to take inspiration from.
- Our product development process and how we tested preservative systems.
- Preservative Efficacy Test (PET) results for the formulas provided.
This class includes a beautiful textbook to download and a demonstration video showing our cosmetic scientist making the Orange and Almond 3-in-1 Exfoliator, Cleanser and Mask, which you can follow along with step by step.
