MODULE 4: FOAMING CLEANSERS AND SHOWER FOAM FORMULAS

Foaming cleansers and shower foams create a fun sensory experience for the user as they are liquid in the bottle and magically turn into foam when dispensed!
By the end of this module you’ll be able to formulate a range of gentle, foaming cleansers and shower foams for different skin types.
We provide three formulas for you to practice with and our demonstration video will show you step by step how to make your product.
You’ll learn how to combine different surfactants, add other complementary ingredients such as humectants, skin conditioning agents and extracts, and calculate the active matter to formulate products suited for dry skin and oily skin.
We provide formulation examples for shower foam, foaming cleanser for dry skin and foaming cleanser for oily skin.
After completing this module you’ll be able to create a range of foaming cleansers and shower foams for yourself, friends and family, or to add to your skincare range!
You must have completed Module 1: The Science of Surfactants and Module 2: Formulating Surfactant-based Face and Body Washes before enrolling on Module 4: Foaming Cleanser and Shower Foam Formulas
Module 4 includes four lessons:
4.1 Introduction to foaming face wash and shower foam/mousse
In this lesson we explain the surfactants that we use in our example formulas.
You’ll also receive a very useful product development and formulation worksheet for foaming cleanser and shower foam/mousse formulas. The worksheet gives you helpful guidance on the ingredients to include in this formula type and the suggested percentages. You’ll find it an invaluable aid to creating your own formulations.
4.2 Example formulation: Shower Foam/Mousse
Our example formula combines three gentle surfactants and several hydrating humectants, and skin conditioning agents for a gentle, moisturizing shower foam. Petitgrain essential oil gives the foam a flowery aroma with woody undertones.
4.3 Example formulation: Bergamot Foaming Cleanser for Oily Skin
Our formula contains two easy-to-find surfactants, combined with extracts and humectants to gentle cleanse oily skin.
4.4 Example formulation: Cucumber and Lavender Foaming Cleanser for Dry Skin
Our foaming cleanser for dry skin contains extra moisturizing and hydrating ingredients to create a gentle, hydrating cleanser.
We also provide a video demonstration so you can see how to make this product yourself.
By comparing the formulations for dry skin and oily skin you’ll learn how to adapt a formula for different skin types through some simple adjustments.
