Formulating for Skin Barrier Support

Skin barrier damage is a common concern, causing dryness, dehydration, sensitivity, irritation, an increase in transepidermal water loss, an uneven texture, dullness and impaired wound healing.

Take a deep dive into the role of the skin barrier, what causes skin barrier damage and how to formulate products to restore and repair the skin barrier.

The skin lipid barrier plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall health and
functionality of the skin. It protects the skin against environmental stressors, regulates moisture levels and prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Despite its essential role, the skin lipid barrier is susceptible to disruption and damage from environmental stressors, lifestyle choices and intrinsic factors.

For example, the popularity of exfoliating acids and retinoids (such as retinol) in skincare leads to many people experiencing a disrupted lipid barrier and, as a result, dry, sensitive skin, redness and inflammation.

In the first part of this deep dive class, you’ll gain a detailed understanding of:

  • The physiology of the skin barrier, including the structure of the epidermis and stratum corneum and their role in the functionality of the skin barrier.
  • Factors affecting skin barrier integrity including environmental factors, lifestyle factors and intrinsic factors.
  • Signs and symptoms of skin barrier damage.

In the second part, we’ll look in detail at:

  • Treatments for skin barrier repair.
  • Beneficial skincare ingredients for skin barrier health.
  • Examples of skin barrier repair products on the market.
  • Product formulations for skin barrier repair created by our in-house cosmetic scientist.

You will receive three formulations from our lab, ready for you to make at home.

  • Soothing Chamomile Essence – to freshen and hydrate the skin, and offer regenerating and barrier-strengthening properties. Containing niacinamide to increase ceramide production and panthenol to help skin regeneration.
  • Replenishing Face and Body Cream – this rich cream contains a ceramide complex and phytosterols to help restore and rebuild the skin barrier, niacinamide to stimulate ceramide production and panthenol to help with skin regeneration.
  • Restoring Oil Serum – containing a blend of carrier oils and specially selected active ingredients including phytosterols and ceramides, to help restore the skin barrier and offer moisturizing, nourishing and anti-inflammatory properties.

With each formulation, we share product development questions, formula, instructions and product specifications. Follow our formulations and then create your own!

This class includes a beautiful textbook to download and a demonstration video showing our cosmetic scientist making the Restoring Oil Serum, which you can follow along with step by step.
