Formulating Men's Skincare Products

We’ll focus on cosmetic products and ingredients that help the concerns of male skin including the overproduction of sebum, hyperpigmentation, clogged pores, inflamed or irritated skin caused by shaving and pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) or ‘razor bumps’.

Discover humectants and hydrating ingredients, light emollients, chemical exfoliants, sebum-balancing ingredients and soothing, anti-inflammatory and regenerating ingredients ideally suited to men’s skin.

In this class, you will learn:

• The anatomy and physiology of male skin including hormones, hair, sebum, sweat, skin pH, skin thickness and collagen density, skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation.
• A beneficial skincare routine for men.
• Useful ingredients for men’s skincare products.
• About men’s skincare brands and examples of products on the market formulated for men’s skin.

You will receive four formulations from our lab, ready for you to make at home.

Daily Hydrating Fluid: A light, fluid emulsion, for everyday moisturization. Light emollients
will soften the skin without leaving it greasy, and niacinamide will help with both balancing sebum production and with hyperpigmentation.

Natural Shaving Cream: An emulsion-based shaving product with added surfactants. It is designed to smooth the skin and to ensure a clean shave.

Soothing After-Shave Gel-Cream: This alcohol-free after-shave product is designed as a gel-cream. It is a light emulsion with a low oil phase and a gel-like texture. It features several active ingredients that will help to soothe irritated skin after shaving.

Exfoliating Nighttime Moisturizer: A richer emulsion containing AHAs to help with dead-
skin cell removal every night. This will prevent clogged pores, pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) and hyperpigmentation, while also hydrating the skin.
