Formulating for Hyperpigmentation

Whether you're experiencing PIH, melasma, or age spots—or helping others who are—this class will guide you in building the perfect brightening skincare routine.
Take a deep dive into hyperpigmentation, what causes it and effective treatment options. Discover a range of active ingredients and how to use them in formulations targeted at creating a more even skin tone and brightening dark spots. Plus, receive four expertly created formulations ready for you to make at home.
Hyperpigmentation is a dermatological condition characterized by skin darkening due to an overproduction of melanin. Effective management requires a comprehensive approach that includes sun protection, topical agents that inhibit melanin production and treatments that promote skin turnover. By incorporating evidence-based skincare products and maintaining consistent preventive measures, significant improvements in skin tone and appearance can be achieved.
In this class, you will learn:
- Physiology of pigmentation - the types of melanin and process of melanin production.
- Causes and types of hyperpigmentation.
- Beneficial skincare ingredients and how they work.
- Other helpful treatments for hyperpigmentation.
You’ll discover a wide range of active ingredients, including alpha arbutin, vitamin C, niacinamide, acetyl glucosamine and more that treat hyperpigmentation in different ways, for example by:
- Preventing activation of tyrosinase.
- Affecting tyrosinase gene transcription.
- Inhibiting tyrosinase.
- Blocking melanosome transfer.
- Increasing desquamation rate and epidermal turnover.

You will receive four formulations from our lab, that use synergistic active ingredients. Follow our formulas to build your brightening skincare routine.
- AHA Resurfacing Toner: This rose-scented toner gently removes dead skin cells, helping to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
- Kojic Acid and Vitamin C Intensive Skin Brightening Serum: This emulsion-based serum contains a trio of active ingredients, Tetra C, kojic acid and licorice extract, to help lessen the appearance of hyperpigmentation and create a more even skin tone.
- Azelaic Acid and Arbutin Essence: This lightweight, water-based treatment product contains azelaic acid and arbutin, which helps to decrease melanogenesis and thus improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation and create a more even skin tone.
- Anti-Pigmentation Moisturizer with Niacinamide: This daily-use moisturizer is specially formulated to hydrate and nourish the skin and deliver active ingredients to help with hyperpigmentation. We are using two anti-pigmentation ingredients with different activity methods and thus work in synergy: Niacinamide blocks melanosome transfer, and N-acetyl glucosamine prevents the activation of tyrosinase enzymes.
With each formulation, we share an example on the market, product development questions, formula, instructions, product specifications and directions for use. Follow our formulations and then create your own! This class includes a beautiful textbook to download and a demonstration video showing our cosmetic scientist making the Azalaic Acid and Arbutin Essence, which you can follow step by step.
